Just a note for all - I have not seen anyone mention the problem with the ignition
resistor - it can be a very big problem if you are in the middle of no where and the
engine cuts out and won't start. You will notice it will initially start, while you
are engaging the starter, but as soon as you let off the key it will instantly die -
the reason is the resistor - it reduces the voltage from the battery to the
distributor from 12 volts to 9 volts to give the points a longer life. However, when
it fails the engine will not run, or will run short periods and then suddenly stop -
acts like you are out of gas when you are not. Fortunately if you are aware of it,
it is easy to fix - the resister is located on the front of the engine and if you
follow the lead from the distributor it will take you right to it. All you need to
do to get home is to pull the two wires from the resistor and hook them together -
be sure they don't touch any metal - that will allow 12 volts to go to the
distributor which will work fine - you should replace the resistor though to extend
the life of the points. Dave
