Joergen,

Great topic! When I re-powered my 66 Sportsman two winters ago, I seriously considered using the Volvo DP/SP unit. (I believe it is a superior unit to the MerCruiser Alpha/Bravo). Besides, Volvo bought the OMC sterndrive factory here in the USA.

Here are the two major hurdles: a) fitment - by that I mean the two primary powerhead mounting locations; and b) costs.

OMC learned their lesson and eventually the market (OEM boat builders) forced them to abandon their uniue stringer mounting (and ball-gear drive) system, with the free-floating transom ring in 1986 with the introduction of the u-joint-driven Cobra series, See: http://www.glmmarine.com/30yearsomc.html

Since your Rogue was designed and built around the stringer drive you will have a MAJOR JOB to re-inforce the boat's transom area, as that becomes a structual, load-bearing member of the powerunit. Presently your Rogue 210 (Small block Chevy) is bolted to the under-floor stringers (hence the moniker) in four places. NO LOADs or vibration are transmitted thru the transom. In fact, if your bilge pump could keep up, you could run the bota withOUT the round rubber aperature ring!

When your Rogue was designed and built, no one at OMC realized that the MerCruiser/Volvo mounting system would come to dominate the market, some 30-40 years later!

Therefore, you can make a Volvo work, but you will essentially need to completely reinforce and glass over the existing transom aperature. MAKE IT STRONG! Once that is done, carefully measure twice and cut once for the new Volvo transom aperature. You will then need to build up the front floor area to meet the new front motor mount dimensions. I'm not sure about clearance dimensions with respect to the motor cover, if you be livin' right, everything will probably fit. But.....

You'll need need to convert all the other subsystems: a) steering, b) wiring, c) instruments, d) throttle/shifter etc. It can be done, as the boat that donated me my 1971, 215hp Stringer, got re-powered with a new 350 Volvo DP at a local Volvo (formely OMC) dealership.

It will make for a much nicer boat, especially with respect to steering. The Evinrude and Johnson boats archaic use of cable/rope steering falls into -- "what-were-those-guys-smokin' category???"

Keep us in the loop?
