Re: [OMC-Boats] Mystery part & Costs

One thing OMC did learn was to lower production costs during their
eight-year run. The original 1962-63-64 OMC/Johnson Deluxe 17 used a
lot of exclusive (read expensive) parts, like the mystery tachometer
pulse adapter. There was even a special version of this tach adapter
for combining the twin 480's on the Dual Deluxe 17 in to a single
dashboard instrument.

Most of us with 66-and-later models never come across these so-called
unusual mystery parts.

When you realize how much these boats sold for in 1960's-valued
dollars ($3500 - $5000) its really a wonder they sold any at all. The
deluxe 17 died off after 1966-67 because it was relatively expensive
compared to the other models (14-16-19) OMC was offering. It's still a
ground-breaking, innovative design with a lot going for it.

Having a complete turn-key package really was a paradigm shift for the
industry. Before OMC popularized the stern drive package, the marine
dealer would have a lot of profit in rigging and outfitting the boat.
But the OMC boats brought that all back to a centralized manufacturing
facility. Distribution and freight on boats was also more difficult,
when other boat manufacturers could setup up regional plants. They had
a harder time maintaining quality control, however it did allow them
to sell at much lower costs.
