My brother lived on Folly Beach prior to his divorce. We still vacation
there. The creeks are pretty calm and about any boat can handle them well.
You can try inching out into the "big water" depending on weather and tides.
They have a very nice public launch there at Folly Beach. It gets crowded in
summer on weekends but otherwise is an easy launch. Don't go out too far if
you are not sure of the boats mechanical condition. If you are out on a
weekend then there should be plenty of traffic (help) should you break down
and need a tow. Carry a tow line and some cash and you won"t need a tow!
Boating in the ocean is complicated and I do not have much experience with
it. My Bother Bill Klauber has been around that area plenty. You can reach
him at Moran Tug Service. Tell him you know his brother Tom and what you are
up to and take his advice. You need to know about things like channel
markers and bouys and tides and when to go where - I just stay to the inland
waterways. You just have to ask around when you get there. I first got into
these boats in the late 60's when my Dad bought a used Sportsman (don't know
the year) which had a Buick V-6. That boat handled better than anything I
had EVER driven before. I think you are in for a pleasant surprise. That
boat had a bilge fire from a loose gas fitting and burned to the waterline.
I later looked to buy another and could only come up with the Rogues that I
have now and have become equally attached to them. I think the trihulls may
take a good bit of pounding in the big waves but my neighbor used to take
his Thunderbird trihull to the ocean back in the 60's and seemed to do fine.
You dont see many boats less than 20 foot length out in the ocean. Just get
out there and see what happens. Also they do a lot of ocean fishing out of
Edisto Beach near Charleston and you might check that out. Lastly check out
the SCDNR (South Carolina Dept of Natural Resources) to find out what you
need to put in your boat to be legal. They have info on landings and
probably can give you fishing information too. Good luck! Tom K.-----
