I'm not sure why the historic confusion. Perhaps OMC labeled that way if the
part was "common" to both systems or OMC shifted the name later to reflect
an improved product?
If you have the SELOC manual or later OMC shop manuals study the section on
TruCourse and you'll see it's a different beast from the aircraft style rope
and pulley. OMC felt it was good enough to use on a quality line of boats
from beginning to end.
Rope and pulley systems have certain advantages unless you are the one
tasked with rigging it under a deck. It probably was more than up to the
task of handling the torque loads of the original OMC Deluxe 17 and the
480-488 V4 sterndrive back in 1962-63. (I'd love to see the rigging on the
OMC Dual 17!) But by the late sixties mechanical systems were very
widespread, partly due to Kiekhafer-Mercury's Ride-Guide system.
