Thanks, Doug.
This could prove to be a very "revealing" thread.
Your number, so far validates my "SWAG" estimates of annual production.
If we assume 1962 production started at 0001, then your number falls into my
"projected" 1963 range:
=======================================================================
1962 - 500 boats (probably optimistically high) (17 OMC brand only)
1963 - 2000 boats (17 OMC brand only)
1964 - 3500 boats (could be a little low) Evinrude & Johnson brands - 16
ft hull intoduced
1965 - 6500 boats 14, 16, 17
1966 - 7000 boats 14, 16, 17, 19
1967 - 7000 boats 14, 16, 19
1968 - 6000 boats 14, 16, 19
1969 - 4000 boats 16, 19
1970 - 2000 boats 16, 19 (probably optimistically high, as well)
=======================================================================
My other theory is the "WI" prefix was added around 1964 when additional
hulls, 14 & 16 were added to the original OMC 17 hull production lines. Why"
who knows?
I'm sure the "Duals" are very few and far between. They have a very
impressive power to weight ratio! 88x2 hp = 176 hp and their weight is under
300 lbs each, so that's less than the Buick V6 I/O package and about 25 hp
more!
I wonder what percentage of this early I/O production went to other Boat
OEM's? I'll bet that in the later half of OMC boat production, they saw a
lot more external OEM sales of I/O units.
Probably convinced them to stop competing for boat business...:)
Damn! this technology was so far ahead of its time. Cool!
