Your wiring will be color-coded very similar to the color diagram I have up on the site from a 1972-3 manual. You should have the "later" style, round, yellow and black connectors on the starboard side of the motor. For the color diagram was for OMC OEM boat builders and they typically installed their own fuel gauges.

ALso, it's not obvious on my web site but the diagrams scale larger depending on your broswer. If you're using MS IE a button will apper in the lower right-hand corner which will allow you to zoom into the diagram.

AS far as the malfunctioning fuel guage goes, it's most likely a faulty tank sender, or bad wire or ground. If I recall when I replaced mine a few years back, OMC used a standard Stewart-Warner 240-30 ohm sender. I can't remember but I think the higher resistance is empty, the lower full. 100-ohms sounds "about" right for 7-gal (roughly have a 16 gal tank). I manual will explain all this if I got it wrong from memory. Here's an explanation:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-gauge1.htm Take a ohmmeter reading at the sender between ground and the sensor terminal. Drain or siphon out a couple gallons and re-measure. The reading should increase in ohms as the tank fuel level decreases. I think your (1970?) boat has the fuel tank buried in the floor, so I'm not sure how eas it will be getting to it?

The combined Fuel-Amp gauge can be kinda confusing. Basically there are three pairs of wires:

The heavy gauge wires are for the ammeter only.
The fuel gauge has a pair of wires, one wire routes to the sender, the other a 12 v source.
There is a wire for dash illumination and a return ground wire on the case for the illumination circuit

Pretty simple if you break it down, as shown on the b/w 1968 diagram on my website.

Lee,
Thanks so much for the info and the direction to the wiring site.
It appears that I have wiring that falls between the 1968 and 1973
schematics. If I was an electrician I could probably figure it out better,
but I have to struggle to trace and try to figure out what this here little
ole wire does. I replaced all the wires between the starter and assist relay
one at a time because of corrosion and missing insulation. My combination
amp/fuel gauge appears to be inop, so that is why I am trying to trace
wires. The gas gauge reads empty with 7 gals of gas installed. The sender
reads over 100 ohms with the pink wire disconnected ,but I am unsure what
ohms I should be to looking for, or what I should be reading in the pink
wire from sender to gauge.
I have both red and orange heavy gauge wire at the fuel/amp gauge as well as
ground and the pink wire.
I have not removed any wires from the gauge assembly, I am reluctant to
disassemble until I understand it better.

Thanks again for your help
Ted Robinson
