I appreciate having points in my boat as I can see and work on them and they will not burn out like a light bulb leaving you out in the middle of nowhere like what happens with todays electronic components. I doubt you could use up a set of points in 20 years as much as we use out boats. They are well protected inside that distributor cap. I did file the points once for my L82 1973 Corvette and it would not run and learned that the newer points (this was in 1982) could not be filed as the tungsten was a coating that was not fileable - I don't know - so I never file the points anymore or anyway. Maybe I'll go and check them this season. Heck if it starts and runs then what the problem. Another thing - I bought a john boat 3 years ago with a new Yamaha 40 - it has maybe 10 hours and is not even broken in yet - well, when I get in it and try and start it - it just fusses - spits and pops and cranks and chokes down and will eventually run when warmed up - during all this cranking I'll be muttering under my breath @...#$% 69 Evinrude Rogue would have been cranked by now! You better hold on to what you got - new is not always better. My Rogue was a basket case of sorts and it is now fixed up and running reliably and it was worth all the effort - not that I didn't think of throwing in the towel many times. Now I am working on Rogue #2 - it will take 5 years or so but I know what lies at the end. Happy Memorial Day to all you boaters - best of luck out on the water. TK
