Absolutely not. You can IDLE with the unit partly raised in shallow water (make sure the water pick-up is submerged!), but those spider gears were not designed to run off-axis under load. Likewise, you should grease those spider gears religously. I recommend greasing them (or at least checking them) every time you go out. This is one thing we've been fanatical about and as a result we are still running on the original spider gears (mechanic says they should be good for another 40 years as long as I keep up the maintenance).
