I had similar symptoms with my 1970 Seasport, Buick V-6. At idle or low throttle the engine ran ok and no idiot lights, however under load it would get hot. I have no water in the oil. I follow this forum regularly and through the trials and tribulations of others I have narrowed it down to a stuck/faulty thermostat or a plugged water jacket in the exhaust manifold. So far I have replaced the thermostat and removed both manifolds. The starboard side manifold was clean with little rust or build-up, however the port side was almost completely blocked. I have cleaned both sides and in the process of re-installing, along with clear input hoses for a quick confirmation that the lower units is pulling in water.
I won't know if all this will fix my problem until I get it back together and test. Have I missed anything obvious?
