Hey Bill,

Sounds like a good plan, it would avoid getting too close to the rudder.  I'll snap some pics of mine at lunch so you can see what I did with mine.

Thanks Scott,

After looking at it again, I'm thinking it might be easier to simply drill new holes about an inch forward (towards the boat) from the rearmost holes and slightly to the outside thus avoiding the exhaust port housing entirely.  I could route out a wider 1" surface hole about 1/8" deep to counter sink the screw head and then drill out the 1/4" hole through the fin for the screw.  I'm not sure countersinking is truly necessary given the low profile of the screw but there is the rubber washer to consider.

Thoughts?

Hey Bill,

I too went with the SE300, and had to make some mods to get it on there.  Although I'm not completly happy with HOW it installed, I am happy with the performance results.  Basically first I had o dremel out the notch in the foil so it could be pushed farther forward on the plate, so it would fit around the taper.  After I did that, when I drilled down, the rear most screws (toward you) actually went through the rudder backer plate, but just barely.  Part of the threads on those holes show when the bolts are on, but then do secure well enough.

I had to use longer bolts, and then when putting them in I had to loosen the rudder so I would have enough room to put the nuts on and use the wrench.  After I got the bolts back on, I pushed my rudder as far as I could port, basically against the nuts and almost where the rudder was to begin with.  It's not as easy an install as doel fins, but quite a bit narrower which is nice if you have a ladder at the stern like I do.  It also helped immensely on getting up on plate at lower speeds and also with making the boat easier to steer.  I think I might have actually lost a mph, but with the added control and with the porpoising gone, it's well worth it.  No more cavitation in tight turns anymore, and added steering control when docking.

Subject: [OMC-Boats] SE300 hydrofoil

Hey guys,

I'm picking up again on an older post about hydrofoils.  I just ordered and picked up a white SE300 hydrofoil and am about to install it to resolve the occasional porpoising and such.

Normally this would involve a simple holed drilled in the plate but I the exhaust outlet at the rearmost position overlaps the two rearmost holes.  For you guys that installed the SE300, how did you handle that??  Did you loosen the exhaust housing and insert the mouting screws upward from bottom?  It looks like it would get messy to drill down from the top, through the exhaust outlet.  The slope of the sides get in the way of a clean bolt attachment (if that makes sense).

How did you do it?

I've got a Stingray XP which is their least expensive model. About $60 most places.  See: http://www.cabelas.com/p-0017147.shtml

My boat gets used almost exclusively for water-skiing, tubing, wake boarding, etc. In these activities I typically run between 16 to 24 mph.

The positives:  Helps reduce bow-rise on hole-shots, totally eliminates prop ventilation over-revving in high-speed, SKIER-DOWN turns, helps reduce porpoising, allows boat to get on plane quicker and maintain lower planning speed by 2 mph.

The negatives:  Reduces best top-end speed by about 3 mph, extends overall length of boat by about 2-3 inches in garage.
