Hi ANDY,
I also use the little plastic NO SPILL catch bottle from Davis. But I've been thinking of installing the Attwood Surge Protector in the vent line, available from West marine.

PS -- this is an issue that every recreational boater should take seriously, Thanks Andy for bringing it to our attention :

The main problem I have is refueling. Has anyone figured out a sure way to fill their fuel tank without dumping fuel all over (I presume everyone has a similar fuel tank overflow that just dumps out the side of the boat when the tank is full). Thus far the best solution I've come up with is a square plastic bottle I have someone hold under the overflow outlet to catch the fuel which I then dump into my car (I almost never fuel in-water). It works, but there has to be a better way short of re-working and re-plumbing the entire fuel system. How about one of those electronic water detectors plumbed into the vent to sound off when the fuel hits it? Anyone have any experience with those? Would they sound fast enough? Any other simple, but effective alternatives anyone has come up ! with?
Its 14 degrees here and boating season seems sooooo far away.

I'm real happy with the addition of a stereo to my boat.

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.
Seems like a good time of year to start a lively thread on this "Seamanship" subject:
I'll throw out some "12-days of Christmas" ideas to get things going:
1. Dual Battery setup
2. VHF Marine radio
3. Man-Overboard Safety Cutoff Lanyard
4. Onboard battery charger (permitting dockside re-charging)
5. Automatic Fire Extinguisher(s) for engine compartment
6. Independent Bilge pump and Blowers
7. Automatic Bilge pump on 24-hr power feed
8. Upgrade (sterndrive) Transom seal (convert obsolete OMC round to rectangular seal)
9. Upgrade (sterndrive) Rope-Pulley steering to OMC Tru-Course, push-push cable steering
10. Upgrade to Submersible LED trailer lights
11. Upgrade (sterndrive) Ignition system (Coil-points-distributor) to HEI-type electronic ignition
12. Add fuel pump discharge overflow line to carb (sterndrive)
