Seems we have chosen both the best and worst hobby in the world. Best boats
but worst to refit. Years ago I looked into top replacements and ran across
a company in Toledo Ohio called Action Canvas & Boat Cover; 2206 Lagrange
St.; Toledo Ohio 43608. 419-241-1181. I called today and they are still in
business. Years ago I talked with a fellow there named Jerry and he knew of
the original supplier ( ? Dickies ) of Toledo or Sandusky ( not sure ) and
they went out of business and Action bought their tooling but have no
patterns but do make them but they need the boat there for fitting which
will not do in your situation. Jerry was not there today. He would be the
one to talk to. I know my 69 Evinrude boats use a grooved rubber leading
edge that attaches to a channel in the front upper windshield with 2 snaps
at each end. Jerry does not have that rubber piece in stock but uses a
flexible clear sheeting stitched to the forward edge. It is thick enough to
fit the channel. You can use seat clips like on truck seat upholstery that
works better in my opinion. It sounds like I need to do an overview of the
tops and hopefully the early version is similar. It uses 2 aluminum bows mid
boat and the trailing edges snap to the inside hull. I had one made recently
and they took the original top apart for a pattern ( they did not allow for
shrinkage of the old top and what a mess ). It was okay but not any better
than my attempt. Anyway, short answer is you are on your own but there is
hope. I see lots of bimini tops used but there is nothing better than the
original design. It functions better (sun wind rain etc. ) and I would
discourage a bimini as most good canvas people could refit a top with some
instruction to original design. I assume you have the original hardware
there like the top bows and their side hull mounts. Tom

Hi everyone
I'm trying to track down the original supplier(s) of factory boat tops for
the Sweet '16 version of 1964-1966 Evinrude/Johnson boats. The OMC Boat
site shows Nielsen Canvas Company as the supplier for mooring covers. I've
spoken with them and confirmed that they still have the original patterns
for the covers. They did not ever supply the tops. Does anyone out there
have an idea of who made the factory tops for these boats either in Canada
or the US ? If so, please let me know - I have two Sweet 16s that are
looking for new lids. One boat is a Canadian version and the other an
American each with a different type of windshield. Given a choice I'd like
to put a top on the American as it's windshield is a much better design.
Thanks
Dan McCormack

Can't help with the question at hand but if anybody needs a top for a 66
Sportsman I have one.
Good to use as is or as a pattern.
Navy Blue
$150.
