Thanks Lee...
I have replaced the stator and when tested with a multimeter it does not
indicate being grounded/shorted out which makes me suspect the
transistorized rectifier. There may be a short in the wiring harness on
the powerhead in an area which is concealed - the wiring is definately quite
brittle. I can't find any material which tells me how to test the rectifier
conclusively and I'm not prepared to spend over $300 for a new one - it is
considered a "vintage" part by Bombardier and is priced accordingly. In any
event, I am going to go ahead and try the conversion I have described and
see what happens. The worst case is that if it doesn't work I have only
wasted some time and perhaps learned something.
