Since I won’t be boating anytime soon, I guess I’m inclined buy the
impeller, tear it down, and if the housing or plate is damaged, order those

manifolds for the old engines also many other parts including impellers.
They don't sell to the public but if you go to their web site you can order
for free a very nice 600 page catalogue along with a 100 page manifold
supplement. They have literally 1000's of cross reference's their part
number to OMC, Johnson and Evinrude. You look at their whole catalogue
online but it's in PDF and not very user friendly. Almost any on-line store
I've purchased from the part comes in a GLMMarine bag or box. I've seen the
same part in one store for $99 and in another for $49. The deals are out
there if you look for them.

 

What I do is look up the part number I need in the catalogue then google it.

I have never had to replace the housing - the cover plate, or ware plate
does get grooved up and some say the water can pass back through he grooves
- but I have had some super worn ones and never had a problem - I have not
done one in a number of years now so I can't remember if it was on my OMC or
some junky mercruiser drives I had - but on one of them I was able to just
turn the plate over so the grooved part was outside and a nice smooth
surface against the impeller. Dave

On mine, the impellor was literally in pieces. All the flappers had broken
and the broken pieces were spinning around in the housing with it. the
“expert” I took it to said the slightest surface damage on the inside of the
housing can cause the rubber to deteriorate fast on the new impellor….it
seemed to make sense, but who knows…..i could’ve been scammed a bit.

I haven’t had my 69 Sportsman 155 out this entire summer. Busy at work and
a lake down 14 ft (Texas drought) to blame. Now with the cooler fall
weather upon me, I’d like to do a few things in my driveway. This

Jeff, my advise to you is to ask any mechanic you propose to use if there is
a water stream out of the sterndrive - if they say no - run away from them
as fast and as far as you can!

Yeah, agreed. But this guy seems legit, has a big shop, boats only, OMC
certified, etc.

Second, always feel the exhaust manifolds - if water is circulating they
will be warm, not hot - and you are ok - if hot, you are not ok.

That is one I will definitely try…..

As to the power loss - the first thing to check is the compression - if any
cylinder is low, say less than 120 psi, you could well have a cracked head -
the most common crack is between the intake and exhaust valves which are
very close together and the crack is usually very thin and hard to see -
usually with this type of crack the engine will run fine when cold and then
lose power as soon as it heats up - so it is best to check compression when
it is hot. Dave

And if it’s a cracked head, that spells new engine, right? Not fixable,
right? (gulp).

Ideal timing for this topic. I am dealing with my hot light coming on
frequently. I have a 155hp Deluxe. I am on my 2nd mechanic now, problem
still not solved. Going for a water test tomorrow with him. Just paid a

wouldn’t start back up when hot. But the past 3 times it has had this

Anyway – will hopefully know more tomorrow after the water test. But my
main question is this:

I have always had outboards, all of which had a nice easy to see tell tale
stream of water shooting out the side when things were working right. I
asked 2 boat mechanics on separate occasions if stern drives were supposed
to have the same thing, both said no – that outboards do, but i/o’s don’t.
But this post says otherwise. So do they or don’t they? And if not, why
not? How are you supposed to tell if water is circulating properly?

Curt,
If the temp light is on the first thing to check is the stern drive while it
is running - on the starboard side of the drive you should see a steady
stream of water shooting out - if not shut her down - that would mean the
impeller is not pumping at all. Next, if water is coming out open the engine
cover and feel the exhaust manifolds - they should be cool enough to hold
your hand on - if not and they feel really hot when the light is on, then
shut her down - it would likely be the engine water pump, or the thermostat
that needs attention. As to wintering, and I know people will flip at this,
but I have seven OMC's and have had them for years and have always just
opened the petcocks on each side of the block - never bothered taking off
the water pump hoses etc. - just make sure the boat is realatively level and
the block will drain down and you will not have any freezing problems. I
keep an OMC V6 Sportsman on the davits on the back of my houseboat - and I
have used it at 10 below zero - when I lift it back out of the water all I
do is open those two petcocks - the only real problem I have is remembering
to close them when I go for a ride - of course eventually warm water will
creep up to my feet - a sure, but gentle reminder! Dave

I am a relatively new owner. I have a Sportsman 155 acquired in a cabin
purchase. Its in terrific condition. I'll post pics on the other site
sometime soon.. I have a relatively basic question. The temp light goes on
after a few minutes in the water. Do I need to replace the water pump and
if so, do I need to know anything special to accomplish that. Where do I
get parts? Also, I need to winterize it soon. Could anyone give me some
pointers there too?
